Coalfields

The coal outcrop at Croxteth is a small outcrop of relatively poor coal. It is part of the larger south-west Lancashire Coal Measures, which carry on into north-east Wales.

The coal at Croxteth is exposed as it falls along the Croxteth Fault line which runs in a north-west/south-east direction, roughly along the line of the River Alt at this point. It is 388m (1274ft) thick at this point.

Croxteth Hall is likely sited in this position at least partly to take advantage of the coal, which would have provided heat in winter and provided the fuel for small-scale industry in the last few hundred years.
